Habib University recently hosted a compelling book talk featuring Zafar Masud, President and CEO of the Bank of Punjab, centered around his latest book, “Seat 1C.” The event, held in the H.M Habib Auditorium, drew a diverse audience eager to hear Masud’s profound reflections on surviving the tragic plane crash on May 22, 2020, an event that claimed 98 lives.
“Seat 1C” is more than just a recounting of the harrowing experience. It’s a memoir and essay collection where Masud delves into his personal journey, drawing from history, literature, art, philosophy, and mythology to advocate for a life lived with empathy. The book explores the transformative impact of the crash and the lessons learned from being granted a second chance at life.
The event began with opening remarks by Ms. Aqsa Junejo, Director of Resource Development at Habib University, who introduced the author and the moderator, Naveen Naqvi, a renowned journalist and actress. Dr. Aamir Hasan, Vice President of Academic Affairs, welcomed the audience, emphasizing the university’s commitment to fostering dialogue and learning.
During the discussion, Masud emphasized the importance of seeking therapy to heal from trauma, a topic often overlooked in leadership. He shared excerpts from his book, highlighting key takeaways from the incident. One of the most impactful lessons he shared was, “What’s important is how you are contributing as a human being and what you are giving to society. It is an evolution process, and the learning will never stop.”
The Q&A session allowed the audience to engage with Masud on various aspects of his journey, including the cathartic process of writing the book, his reflections on the trauma, and his views on compassionate banking and leadership.
The event was attended by prominent corporate leaders, including Muhammad Jawaid Iqbal (President and CEO, United Bank Limited), Arif Habib (CEO of Arif Habib Corporation), Irfan Siddiqui (CEO of Meezan Bank), and Zahid Mir (CEO of Pakistan Refinery Limited), along with Masud’s family, friends, and members of the community.
